Vir Das tom-toms his absurdist humour

Fox in morning light

Aspiring to be a clever satire, ‘Happy Patel’ turns out to be more frustrating than fun.

Those who have followed Vir Das’ comedy specials would know that he blends satire with observational humour better than most. He voices the experiences of the misfits, and his skits capture everyday absurdities arising from cultural clashes, racism, and jingoism. This week, Vir shifts stage, turning his pet peeves into an irreverent and frenetic parody of our times. Making his debut as a director, he turns up ‘in and as’ Happy Patel, a clumsy British spy with Indian roots. More at ease in the culinary terrain, perhaps because of his genetic composition, than picking clues, Happy is sent on a mission to Goa to rescue a British scientist from the clutches of a vicious crime lord, Mama (Mona Singh). Her favourite recipe is ‘cut-let’ and she is seeking a formula for fair skin. Happy mispronounces Hindi, and here lies most of the ingenuity in writing. Tum (you) becomes Tom and so on. On his crazy hunt for Mama, he rhymes with his Sikh handler (Sharib Hashmi) and loses his tasting finger to Mama and his heart to dancer Rupa (Mithila Palkar).

The Vir Das-starring comedy about a bumbling NRI spy in Goa is unapologetically crazy, clumsy and contagious

Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos is like that restless kid in school whose sense of humour is so niche and Hollywood-coded that he decides to employ Indian-ness as a punchline to impress his elite classmates. He hits them with wave after wave of wonky NRI accents, Bollywood tomfoolery, spoofy imitations, endless pranks, so-unfunny-it’s-funny cultural gags — until the classmates start to enjoy his enthusiasm. His madness becomes infectious, even if he’s just too much of an acquired taste at times, because he arrives every morning with a sole purpose: to play the fool. Who doesn’t fancy a comedian that commits to their image, swings for the fences, and turns their own pandering into a joke? Maybe the kid’s comfort watch is Delhi Belly.

Vir Das film wants to be about everything. The trouble with so many ideas jostling about is that very little gets to breathe.

Somewhere in merry England lives Happy, a nice guy who can assemble a nifty sandwich which pleases his British dads enormously. They go ummm, chewing beatifically. He can also execute a mean on pointe, in his powder-pink ballet shoes. Everything seems to be going swimmingly with the lad, but all of a sudden he has this feeling of something ‘missing’.

In the throes of death, Don Patel (Aamir Khan) of Goa has a hilarious end with maid Sakhubai also breathing her last, discussing mopping, cleaning and unwashed utensils. Two British agents take back with them Sakhubai’s infant and bring him up as Happy (Vir Das), the wiz chef who makes the yummiest sandwiches in the world. In Goa, the don’s daughter Mama (Mona Singh), his evil inheritor, is a super chef too. Her special cutlets (poisoned for victims) and her good work cutlets (a reward for her boys), ready to be served. Mama’s also in the fairness and beauty business, a little jibe at Indian prejudice against dark skin. IMUMI is a brand – it’s a giggle. There are intercuts with the eternally charming Sanjeev Kapoor and his ‘salt to taste’ tip, all quite wacky.
