2007 में आई पहली वाली ‘धमाल’ में गोआ के एक पार्क में ‘डब्ल्यू’ आकार में खड़े पेड़ों के नीचे खज़ाना दबा था। इस बार एक वीरान टापू में ‘एम’ आकार में खड़ी पहाड़ियों के नीचे खज़ाना है। खज़ाना भी किसका, सौ साल पहले एक डाकू शैतान सिंह का जो वह अंग्रेज़ों से लूटा करता था। अब इस खज़ाने को खोजने निकली हैं तीन टीमें-गुड्डू और जॉनी, आदि और मानव व आदि की पत्नी, लल्लन और उसकी पत्नी। साथ ही इनके पीछे पड़े हैं डाकू अधूरा और उसके साथी। इस सफर में हैं ढेरों मुसीबतें, उनसे बचने की कसरतें और इन सब की लल्लुआना हरकतें। ज़ाहिर है मकसद आपको हंसाना है, ठहाके लगवाना है। ‘धमाल’ सीरिज़ की फिल्में दर्शकों को किसी वीडियोगेम या कार्टून कॉमिक्स के भीतर ले जाती रही हैं। एक ऐसा संसार जहां फिज़िक्स-कैमिस्ट्री के नियमों की धज्जियां उड़ा कर उनसे हास्य उपजाया जाता है। किसी ने घर की घंटी बजाई और उससे आने वाले करंट ने बंदे का तंदूरी मुर्गा बना दिया या किसी के बम में चाकू घुसने के बावजूद खून न निकलना जैसे ये सीन हमें डोनाल्ड डक, मिकी माउस या टॉम एंड जैरी की दुनिया में ले जाते हैं। उनमें जो होता है वह कहीं से भी तार्किक नहीं लगता, लेकिन उसे देख कर आप हंसते हैं, ठहाके लगाते हैं, आपको मज़ा आता है और आपका दिल-दिमाग हल्का होता है। यह फिल्म भी आपको वही मज़ा देती है। बस, बच्चे बन जाइएगा इसे देखते हुए।

The Dhamaal franchise is now almost twenty years old — which is quite an achievement for a series built on a storyline thinner than a Bollywood hero’s patience before the interval. The makers managed to squeeze out two films in the early years (2007 and 2011), but when fresh ideas became as rare as logic in a slapstick comedy, the obvious solution was simple: recycle the old ones.

Should you go watch Welcome to the Jungle, still running in theatres, or Dhamaal 4, the latest in the long-running treasure hunt franchise? These things are subjective, but let me present a quick comparison. Welcome to the Jungle is directed by Ahmed Khan. Dhamaal 4 is directed—in the kindest sense of the term—by Indra Kumar. Welcome to the Jungle is a spoof about the making of movies. Dhamaal 4 shows why some movies should never be made at all. Welcome to the Jungle has satirical ambitions. Dhamaal 4 has hysterical collisions. Welcome to the Jungle is a loose rehash of Tropic Thunder. Dhamaal 4 is a hard retread of the first, second and third Dhamaal.

It begins with madness and climaxes with mayhem, but then you expect no less, no more from the popular franchise that thrives and hinges upon humour and humour alone. As ‘Dhamaal’ moves forward towards its fourth outing, it is more of the same in a way. This time, the madcap comedy centres on a treasure, some Shaitain Singh Ka Khazana that a whole lot of fumbling/bumbling characters are after. Ravi Kishan plays a pirate, Adhura, who is holding hostage Prithvi (Upendra Limaye), the man who has the map and can decode it too. Ajay Devgn as Guddu lands on his ship; what happens hereafter is meant to be a roller-coaster where nothing is to be taken seriously. To give the devil his due, the film does offer you some laugh-out-loud moments but gets painful and laborious in equal parts as well.

बॉलीवुड की नैया इन दिनों सीक्वल और फ्रैंचाइजी फिल्‍मों पर ही सवार चल रही है। अकेले अजय देवगन की बात करें तो वह ‘गोलमाल’, ‘सिंघम’, ‘दे दे प्यार दे’, ‘दृश्यम’, और ‘रेड’ फ्रैंचाइजी में पार्ट 1, 2, 3, 4 की झड़ी लगाए हुए हैं। इसी लिस्ट में वह 2007 की हिट कॉमेडी फिल्म ‘धमाल’ के तीसरे पार्ट ‘टोटल धमाल’ का भी वह हिस्सा बने थे। अब शुक्रवार 10 जुलाई 2026 को इसकी नई कड़ी ‘धमाल 4’ सिनेमाघरों में पहुंच चुकी है। लेकिन अभी दो हफ्ते पहले ही आई अक्षय कुमार की ‘वेलकम टू द जंगल’ की तरह ही, अजय देवगन की यह फिल्म भी दर्जन भर कलाकारों के साथ पागलपन भरी बिना सिर-पैर वाली कॉमेडी फिल्म है, जो आपको हंसाने की कोशिश तो खूब करती है, लेकिन उसमें कामयाब कहीं-कहीं पर ही हो पाती है।

For a franchise whose premise is a loud satire of the destructive nature of human greed, the driving force, Indra Kumar, behaves like his desperate protagonists. By pushing the series into a hollow fourth installment, the makers seem to be executing their own creative heist — mining the final ounces of goodwill from a beloved 2007 comedy to secure a quick box-office payout. Ajay Devgn, who has produced the summer adventure, leads a pack of imbecile characters on screen chasing a mythical treasure. The star brings his deadpan energy to the madness as Guddu, who teams up with the eccentric Johnny (Sanjay Mishra) to hunt for a goldmine of laughs.

A man slipping off a banana peel might be the most archaic, juvenile way to induce laughs. Dhamaal 4 has it. It also has people getting electrocuted, getting hit in the crotch, getting hit on the head, getting attacked by a tiger, a crocodile, tribals and… an octopus, and also hanging, God so much hanging, from CGI cliffs, CGI buildings and CGI hot air balloons. Remove the zany background music and the film actually seems like a Final Destination installment. Just that death only comes for our brain cells.

In 2007, Indra Kumar came up with Dhamaal, in which a whole bunch of characters led by Sanjay Dutt, tumbled and fell into holes full of risible jokes. This was followed by Double Dhamaal and Total Dhamaal, which were more of the same, in terms of crassness. 2007 was a big year for brainless comedy, with Partner, Hey Babyy, Buddha Mar Gaya the big hitters, toplined by Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Inaneness was the name of the game, but the occasional touch of goofiness and entire starry ensembles committing to stupidity, saved these films. How do you top the last two Dhamaals? Dhamaal 4 comes up with a number, because it can’t be bothered with thinking of what comes after double and total: maybe four was better than double double or total total.
