‘प्यार जब नया होता है तो एक्साइटिंग होता है, जबकि पुराना प्यार उस फटी हुई टी-शर्ट की तरह होता है, जिसमें रात को सोते हुए हम कंफर्ट महसूस करते हैं।’ शाहिद कपूर के किरदार कुणाल का यह एक डायलॉग डायरेक्टर होमी अदजानिया की नई फिल्म ‘कॉकटेल 2’ का सार है। लेकिन इस एक बात को कहने के लिए उन्होंने ढाई घंटे का साधारण और कंफ्यूजिंग सा प्रेम त्रिकोण बुना है। इसमें ग्लैमर तो भरपूर है, लेकिन यह गहराई से कोसों दूर है। होमी अदजानिया ने साल 2012 में ‘कॉकटेल’ बनाई थी। तब फिल्म में दीपिका पादुकोण, डायना पेंटी और सैफ अली खान थे। दीपिका के निभाए किरदार वेरोनिका को आज भी याद किया जाता है। डायना पेंटी की पहचान आज 14 साल बाद भी इस फिल्म की मीरा के तौर पर होती है, लेकिन अब इसके स्पिरिचुअल सीक्वल (कहानी नई, अंदाज वही) ‘कॉकटेल 2’ में ना तो वह पुरानी वाली खुशबू है, और ना ही वह नशा।
A Sobering Enterprise
Homi Adjania’s Cocktail 2 is the spiritual sequel to his own 2012 film Cocktail starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty — a love triangle referencing Archie comics and doffing its hat to the Betty and Veronica prototype. The latest offering written by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain once again gives us a menage à trois where two women Diya and Ally ( Rashmika Mandana and Kriti Sanon) fight over the affection and affectation of one man Kunal( Shahid Kapoor). And once again the exotic locations and risqué outfits cannot hide a safe, domesticated, traditional core lurking underneath all that gloss.
Goes Here, There, Nowhere
Despite picturesque settings and some musical moments, the film fails to surpass its predecessor's impact.
Cocktail was penned by Imtiaz Ali. Cocktail 2 has been written by Luv Ranjan. Imtiaz Ali is the genius behind iconic scripts like Jab We Met, Rockstar, Tamasha, Amar Singh Chamkila and last Friday’s Main Vaapas Aaunga, to name just a few. The three Pyaar Ka Punchnama films, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar belong to Luv Ranjan. This review could have ended here itself, but I am not that lucky. Well, I watched Cocktail 2, so I didn’t exactly wake up clutching a fortune cookie on this particular filmi Friday.
Kriti-Shahid-Rashmika-Starrer Brings the Tamest, Dumbest Love Triangle in Recent Times
Fuelled by industrial-strength rancid misogyny, director Homi Adajania tells us to beware women and pity men, taking a leaf out of co-writer Luv Ranjan’s familiar trash
In Homi Adajania’s Cocktail 2, Shahid Kapoor’s loyal, nice Kunal falls into the snare his long-term partner, Diya (Rashmika Mandanna) sets. It got on her nerves when he joked with their friends that she would never be able to find out if he cheated on her. This lodges in her head and she cannot shake it off, in spite of his reassurances. She gets paranoid about his infidelity which is telegraphed in a distasteful montage designed to be comic. When the couple arrives in Sicily for a vacation, an opportunity presents itself. Diya’s school friend, Ally (Kriti Sanon), a wild spirit, blasts in as a gale through the tameness, force of habit which Diya and Kunal’s relationship had sloughed into. She has no boundaries, which the couple dutifully sticks to.
