The 16-episode comedy series headlined by Neena Gupta goes for broke in search for belly laughs and pockets of charm

How do you review last-gen media? Watching Chumbak is a bit like watching your parents, grandparents and assorted relatives put on a play: you nod encouragingly, laugh at the one-liners (if they’re good), and, when no one’s looking, merrily go back to scrolling your phone. Five quirky families in Chumbak Colony deal with chaotic conflicts and hilarious antics as neighbours. An elderly couple, Rajni and Kuku, decide to divorce, creating ripples through the neighbourhood. Anant Joshi’s flair for humour comes to the fore occasionally, while Sandeepa Dhar, Amyra Dastur and Arjun Bijilani pass muster. Manasi Parekh is strictly okay. Helly Shah, Sumeet Raghavan, Delnaaz Irani and Deven Bhojani go quite overboard in shallow roles.
