Vishwak Sen, KV Anudeep deliver two hours of awkwardness
Sat, February 14 2026
Starring Vishwak Sen and Kayadu Lohar, Funky is an absurd comedy drama in classic KV Anudeep mould. While his previous films worked, his third film leaves you with a bitter aftertaste.
Naaku galeej anipisthundhi, which translates to “It’s all too awkward,” is a repetitive phrase in KV Anudeep’s third film, Funky. After two hours and eight minutes, it’s this thought – and the only one – that you are left with. Director KV Anudeep’s unique sense of humour may not be everyone’s cup of tea. In three films, he’s made that loud and clear. But there’s a sense of earnestness and honesty in Jathi Ratnalu and Prince that hardly makes you look away. You’d want to know what new trick he has up his sleeve the third time around.

Sobhita's thriller bites into cliches despite valid lessons
Sun, January 25 2026
Directed by Sharan Koppisetty, Cheekatilo is a murder mystery headlined by Sobhita Dhulipala. With valid lessons on patriarchy, the film bites into cliches of an investigative thriller.
Murder mysteries and investigation dramas always rely on thrills, suspense and high-stakes drama. Most whodunnit thrillers have a male hero leading the investigation from the front. The Telugu film, Cheekatilo, has the feisty Sobhita Dhulipala leading a murder mystery, thereby standing out from a crowd of films of the same genre. Did Cheekatilo manage to crack the formula? Let’s find out!

Baby Girl
Drama, Thriller (Malayalam)
Nivin Pauly's film has promising core, but convenience takes over
Sun, January 25 2026
Baby Girl, directed by Arun Varma and starring Nivin Pauly, Lijomil Jose, Sangeeth Prathap, and Abhimanyu Shammi Thilakan, is an emotional thriller about the kidnapping of a three-day-old baby. The film struggles to balance drama and thriller elements, ultimately failing to do justice to either genre.
A few minutes into Nivin Pauly’s Baby Girl, we are taken into a hospital where the doctors have called Code Pink. Those who are familiar with medical dramas like Dr House or Grey’s Anatomy would be instantly hooked, as Code Pink means a baby is missing. In director Arun Varma’s Baby Girl, a three-day-old baby girl goes missing. Sanal Mathews (Nivin Pauly) is an attender who is in the thick of things here. At its core, Baby Girl shows immense promise to be an emotional thriller. But, Baby Girl takes a different route and struggles to find a balance between being a drama and a thriller.

Jiiva's heartfelt satire wins with warmth
Thu, January 15 2026
Directed by Nithish Sahadev, the political satire starring Jiiva, Thambi Ramaiah and Ilavarasu is a realistic drama that's harmless and full of heart. It brings forth how human egos affect the lives of their loved ones.
In a world where audiences constantly gravitate towards big spectacle films, your heart still aches for a cute, funny movie that tugs at your heartstrings, makes you laugh, and lets you simply enjoy your time at the theatre. While these films don’t get the same attention as big-budget entertainers, they hold a special place in your heart. That’s exactly what Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil offers.

Sivakarthikeyan's period drama reignites Hindi imposition debate
Sat, January 10 2026
Director Sudha Kongara Prasad's Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, Ravi Mohan, Atharvaa and Sreeleela, the film is about student revolution against Hindi imposition. With solid emotional beats, the film has all the potential to become a Pongal winner despite some shortcomings.
Parasakthi – the 1952 film title holds significance for multiple reasons in Tamil cinema. The original was crucial for catapulting Sivaji Ganesan’s stardom and popularising DMK’s (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) ideology in Tamil Nadu, championing Dravidian politics. Decades later, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, which tackles Hindi imposition, hits theatres ahead of Pongal. Does it ignite fire among viewers? Let us find out!

The Raja Saab
Comedy, Horror, Fantasy (Telugu)
Prabhas's horror comedy is devoid of charm, thrills and chills
Sat, January 10 2026
Director Maruthi's The Raja Saab, starring Prabhas, Sanjay Dutt and Nidhhi Agerwal, is a fantasy horror comedy that relies heavily on the lead actor. However, there's hardly anything that's redeemable in this soulless film.
Prabhas’s much-anticipated film, The Raja Saab is about a search for a missing grandfather. Over its three-hour runtime, viewers also end up searching for more than a grandfather. They seek plot cohesion, character depth, genuine scares, or consistent entertainment value - must-haves for every film. Like the film’s protagonist wandering through a haunted palace, you may feel a lack of clear direction or a fully satisfying destination. The Raja Saab begins with Raja (Prabhas) living with his grandmother Gangamma, played by Zarina Wahab. Gangamma suffers from Alzheimer’s and remembers only her missing husband Kanakaraju (Sanjay Dutt) and her grandson. She tells Raja to keep looking for his missing grandfather, who often appears in her dreams.

Vikram Prabhu film tackles minority struggle, bias with quiet strength
Fri, December 26 2025
Director Suresh Rajakumari's Sirai, starring Vikram Prabhu, LK Akshay Kumar and Anishma, is a crisp procedural drama. With restrained performances and exceptional social commentary on minority oppression, the film serves as a fitting conclusion to 2025.
Actor Vikram Prabhu’s choice of scripts has been impressive in the recent past. His upcoming venture, Sirai, marks his second collaboration with writer Tamizh (also an actor) after their critically acclaimed Taanakkaran. Sirai, like Taanakkaran, casts Vikram Prabhu’s protagonist as a police officer, but from the district armed reserve wing.

Vrusshabha
Action, Drama (Malayalam)
Mohanlal's reincarnation drama lacks novelty, is endlessly long
Thu, December 25 2025
The film, directed by Nanda Kishore and starring Mohanlal with Samarjit Lankesh, is a fantasy action drama centred on reincarnation. The film lacks technical finesse and feels uninspired.
Mohanlal has had a phenomenal 2025 with three consecutive hits. He started the year strong with L2: Empuraan, followed it up with a delicious crime thriller, Thudarum and struck a hat-trick with the heartwarming Hridayapoorvam. Vrusshabha is his fourth film as a hero (barring cameos in Kannappa and Bha Bha Ba). Did the film succeed in impressing the audience? Let’s find out!
